Best Console FPS Titles of 2013

Best Console FPS Titles of 2013

I have literally seen friends come to blows over this subject. I have seen guys push little kids to the ground for saying that they liked one shooter better than another. People lose their freakin’ minds over this stuff. So rather than me sitting here saying that this title is better than that title or whatever, I decided to just take a look back at the FPS titles released on consoles in 2013 and let you all fight it out.

Payday 2

Payday 2

Entering the list at number ten, Payday 2 took the concept of bank robbery to a whole new level. It gave you the chance to get together a crew of your friends and trick out your gear and plans, then go rob some banks and try to get away with it. Obviously things got harder as the heists got more complex and had bigger hauls, but all in all this was a solid shooter and an armored truck load of fun to play.

Aliens: Colonial Marines

Aliens: Colonial Marines

For fans of Ridley Scott’s series of movies, comics and games Colonial Marines gave gamers a chance to go back and find out what happened to the Tholocco after leaving LV426. You run into some gear and dialogue from the second movie in the Aliens franchise as well as seeing the aftermath of the Xenomorphs and their battle with the Marines. The best thing about this title was the fact that Gearbox stepped in and totally saved what could have otherwise been just another blight on an epic film franchise.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

It doesn’t matter that this game was just a fifteen dollar download. It was a stand-alone title that was far and above being just a re-skin of Far Cry 3 . They took this title to a whole new level of badass and even brought in Michael Beihn (who at least made an appearance in more action movies than damned near anyone else in Hollywood) to lend the use of his iconic voice for the protagonist. It was littered with profanity, blood, guts, guns and dinosaurs. What’s not to love?

Crysis 3

Crysis 3

In what seemed like the year of the bow in shooter titles, Crysis brought it into an otherwise gun-heavy game. The ability to customize the bow and the arrows made it a formidable weapon in the third entry to the series. In usual Crysis form, the visuals were intense, the gameplay jumped from stealthy to insane at the drop of a hat, and the story itself was as fun as it ever was to play. Man, putting an explosive arrow in somebody’s head was like my favorite thing to do in this game, but that’s just my two cents.

Blacklight Retribution

Blacklight Retribution

I first saw that this game was available for free on the Playstation network when I got my PS4, and I was extremely skeptical. I was already a little disappointed in Warframe and didn’t want this to be another letdown, but I downloaded it anyway and fired it up. It ended up being an intensely fun game to play. I called some friends and we jumped on together and started wrecking shop. For a free to play title, this one deserves its spot on the list.

Metro: Last Light

Metro: Last Light

Most of the time sequels are not so great. Very often they’re not even as good as the first game in the series. And more often than not, the story in the sequel gets skewed from the original and gets a little confusing and often just plain dumb. But none of that happened with Last Light . The second entry to the Metro franchise, Last Light carried on immediately after the events of the first game and continued on within the confines of the canon of the story. An excellent and well thought out shooter.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

Killzone: Shadow Fall

When I saw the previews for this I was excited. The Killzone series on consoles is one that has gotten better with time. The ongoing war with the Helghans has taken its toll on the players, but not on the franchise. If anything, I found myself invigorated and ready to smash some Helghast heads. Not only was the opening custcene one of the more awesome ones I’ve seen in a while, the gameplay and story continued to impress the more I got into the game. If you are a fan of the series, or if you are just looking for another solid shooter to play on PS4, pick up Killzone: Shadow Fall .

BioShock Infinite

BioShock Infinite

Though I staunchly disagree that BioShock should have gotten shooter of the year at the VGX awards, there is no denying that it was a great game. The story may have gotten little convoluted towards the end and it may not have felt at all like a BioShock game, but Ken Levine and his team knew what they were doing. They crafted a game that was a joy to both watch and play. With a visual style all its own and the nausea inducing trips around on Columbia’s rail system, BioShock Infinite was a great all-around shooter.

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: Ghosts

As usual Call of Duty grossed billions of dollars on opening day. But who cares? Oh wait, about 16 million gamers. Even though Activision tried to dupe everyone into believing that Ghosts had actually sold more than it had, they finally came clean and said that the sales numbers of Ghosts were around 50% of the sales numbers for Black Ops 2 . Nevertheless, the game is a great shooter with all the typical Call of Duty flash and underoos and lunchboxes and bed sheets and, well you get the idea.

Battlefield 4

Battlefield 4

EA games had to overcome some frame rate issues and a few other bugs really quickly, but they did just that and released quite possibly the best Battlefield game ever. Finally with the ability to play online battles that, until now, only PC gamers were able to do, Battlefield 4 has taken the online FPS shooter to whole new levels of awesome on consoles. The graphical content is awesome, the story is solid (but how many of you play shooters for the story anyway?) and the online gameplay is incredible. After finishing my first 64-player match, I needed a cup of coffee and a smoke to calm down. Yes, It was that good.
