Top 8 Easter Eggs Hidden in The Phantom Pain

Top 8 Easter Eggs Hidden in The Phantom Pain

Part of what makes the Metal Gear Solid series so great is that there’s a sense of levity included in every game. Sure, they’re melodramatic and serious affairs, but Kojima Productions always went out of its way to reference previous games and lighten things up. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is no exception, and these eight Easter eggs prove it.

This is a Kojima Productions Production

Konami may have tried to pretend Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions didn’t exist, but there’s undeniable proof of it in the very beginning of the game. When Snake is escaping the hospital in the Prologue, he’ll pass a flier that is reminiscent of the one Kojima Productions used at a Game Developers Conference a few years ago, saying the name of the developer and telling people to visit booth CP 2308. Snake’s even featured on the flier!

Signs Are There For a Reason

Signs Are There For a Reason

Mother Base is a work in progress. You can almost consider it another character, complete with growth and development. Which means lots of construction. Don’t ignore those signs, though! If Venom Snake loiters in front of one warning boxes may fall from above, that’s exactly what will happen. Boxes will fall on his head, knocking him to the ground.

Try Putting Ocelot To Sleep

Try Putting Ocelot To Sleep

Venom Snake always has his gun on him at Mother Base, and he “could” use it on his allies if he wanted to. In fact, you may want to load up some tranquilizer darts and shoot Ocelot a few times. He won’t fall asleep, but he’ll say he’s had drug resistence training, will speak in Japanese, and generally be hilarious.

Quiet Has Good Taste in Music

Once you’ve recruited buddies, you can find them hanging out at Mother Base. Venom Boss can check in on his team while they’re relaxing, maybe even enjoy a little time with them. If you stop by and visit Quiet, you’ll learn she loves music, and often listens to “Snake Eater” from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

It’s Your Birthday

It’s Your Birthday

This Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain easter egg might make you wish you’d lied about your birthday. If you play on your special day, Venom Snake will be called back to Mother Base. There, you’ll be greated by fireworks and your team singing a birthday song for you. You even get a cake.

The P.T./Silent Hills Connection

The P.T./Silent Hills Connection

Make sure you take some time to explore Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s world. If you do, you might find the same audio recording from P.T. in Africa. More specifically, near the place you visited for Mission 20: Voices. A radio in a tent replays the same recording discussing a murder that you may have heard in the Silent Hills demo.

A Quiet Shower

A Quiet Shower

Since Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is an open world game, Venom Snake is going to spend a lot of time in the field. If you’re away long enough, you’ll start to stink. When you return to Mother Base, one of two things can happen. Most likely, Ocelot will dowse you with a bucket of water because you’re disgustingly dirty. But, if you took Quiet along as your Buddy and have 100% bonded with her, she’ll stop Ocelot from soaking you. The two of you will go off and shower together instead.

Hideo Kojima Has Been Kidnapped

Don’t ignore the side-ops missions in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, or you could end up missing your chance to bring Hideo Kojima to Mother Base. “Intel Agent Extraction,” side-ops mission 112, has you rescue Kojima from hostile forces and bring him home. Well done, Big Boss.
