7 Games You Might Not See in 2016

7 Games You Might Not See in 2016

It’s officially 2016! As a new year dawns, excitement and hype builds for all the games that we could see this year. I say “could,” because there are no guarantees. Delays are all too common in this industry, with many titles being pushed from one year to the next. After all, we’ve already kicked off 2016 with one! Platinum Games has pushed its Scalebound for the Xbox One to 2017.

So join me as I speculate about games that are supposedly going to be released in 2016, but still might slip into 2017. After all, the year has only just begun, and who knows what surprises it will bring?

Yooka Laylee

Yooka Laylee

I’m kicking this list off with a safety game. We’re starting with Yooka Laylee . Playtonic has been pretty open about the game, but I suspect it’ll end up delayed until 2017, instead of released in October 2016. Why? Well, first of all, we haven’t had a real progress update since October 2015 . Communication is critical. Going over two months without a Kickstarter game update could be concerning.

Also, Yooka Laylee is a Kickstarted game. These don’t have the best track record when it comes to accuracy around release dates. I’m thinking January or February 2017, so it won’t get caught up and outpaced in the holiday 2016 rush.

Mass Effect Andromeda

Mass Effect Andromeda

A Mass Effect Andromeda delay is another safe bet. It’s supposed to be released at the end of 2016, but we don’t have a more defined release window than 2016. If we had a month or even a quarter, I’d be more optimistic. Without that? Nope.

Also, think about how much information we have and haven’t seen about it until now. That, combined with Development Director Chris Wynn leaving BioWare, isn’t exactly encouraging. I’m thinking it’ll really be released in spring 2017.

Quantum Break

Quantum Break

Quantum Break has been delayed a lot. Remedy announced the game in 2013. It was supposed to be released in 2014. That was pushed into 2015. In 2015, we were told April 5, 2016 is d-day. (As in, debut day.) Being both a digital, live action series and a game, though, does make things tricky. Also, the Alan Wake developer is known for delays.

I suspect we will see Quantum Break this year, but maybe not in April. Seems like it could end up being a summer thing.

Tom Clancy’s The Division

Tom Clancy’s The Division

There are so many Tom Clancy games that you’re forgiven for forgetting Tom Clancy’s The Division exists. Especially since we aren’t hearing or seeing too much about this game that constantly gets delayed. Tom Clancy’s The Division was delayed from 2014 to 2015 in two springs ago, and last spring was pushed from 2015 to 2016. It has a March 8, 2016 release date, but this is another game where it wouldn’t be too crazy if it gets another minor nudge.

Tom Clancy’s The Division could be out in March, but it could also get pushed back a little bit more, maybe to June or July. It depends on how much information Ubisoft doles out and if there is an Assassin’s Creed void the company needs to fill.

Crackdown 3

Crackdown 3

Crackdown 3 is going to be a revolutionary game. After all, it’s boasting some rather incredible cloud-based technology. Not to mention there’ll also be multiplayer and tons of destroyable terrain. It’s going to be a sandbox of glory and mayhem. It’s ambitious, and therein lies the problem. Crackdown 3 could be too ambitious for 2016.

After all, it already was pushed from 2015. We’ve seen footage that looks amazing, but this is a game Microsoft is going to want to get right. Crackdown 3 is going to do things with video game destruction that have never been done before, and I think that extra attention to detail is going to send it into 2017.

Homefront: The Revolution

Homefront: The Revolution

Homefront: The Revolution is a bit of a tragedy. This is a mess of a game that’s been in limbo since the THQ collapse. Even prior to its fall, though, hands kept switching from Kaos Studios, to THQ Montreal, to Crytek UK, with the game finally landing with Dambuster Studios.

The same goes for publishing duties. Crytek was supposed to work on that with Deep Silver. Except Homefront: The Revolution was sold off to Deep Silver in 2014. There were supposed to be multiplayer betas and a 2015 release date. Now, there’s only a vague 2016 release window, which will never happen.

Seems like a lot of effort for a sequel to a game that, frankly, kind of sucked.

Dead Island 2

Dead Island 2

I very strongly doubt we will see Dead Island 2 in 2016. To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes one of those vaporware games that lingers for a few more years in development hell. Dead Island came out in 2011. Work on Dead Island 2 started in 2012, with Yager Development at the helm. It was shown off at E3 2014. Then, trouble hit.

Dead Island 2 was supposed to be out in spring 2015. Instead, that summer was when Yager was pulled from the game and put on another project. The tentative release window was 2016. We haven’t heard anything about Dead Island 2 in months. We don’t even know who’s developing it now. Let’s face it – it’s dead, not undead.
