5 Fun Deadpool Facts You Need Before Seeing the Movie

5 Fun Deadpool Facts You Need Before Seeing the Movie

Deadpool is out in theaters on February 12, and it had no problem whatsoever securing an R rating. That’s atypical for a Marvel superhero movie, but Deadpool isn’t your typical superhero; he’s what you’d call an anti-hero. His actions are rarely selfless or praiseworthy, but his relentless sense of humor and flippant disregard for the sanctity of life make his story a messy, spellbinding spectacle that you won’t want to miss. Deadpool has a dedicated cult following, but he’s definitely not one of the most popular characters in the Marvel universe. Don’t worry, though, we’ve got you covered. You need to know what you’re getting into when you go see this film, so we’ve compiled 5 hardcore-nerdy facts about this mischievous assassin. Read up so you can rap with the real fans at the midnight release.

Even His Name Is a Crack at Someone

Even His Name Is a Crack at Someone

So Deadpool is known as the “merc with the mouth,” right? He’s as sarcastic as he is merciless and he’ll take a crack at anybody, even if they exist in another comic book universe. Do you know Deadpool’s real name? It’s Wade Wilson. More than a slick name that rolls off of the tongue, Wade Wilson is actually a play on Slade Wilson: the real name of legendary DC villain Deathstroke (pictured). The two share some striking similarities, and in many illustrations even look the same when using swords. Deathstroke debuted over a decade before Deadpool existed, so the fact that one is based on the other is uncontested, and Deadpool’s real name is evidence that he just doesn’t give a damn.

He’s a Huge Nerd

He’s a Huge Nerd

This is one thing that makes Deadpool such a lovable antihero, and it’s also what makes him such a big hit for cosplayers at cons: he’s just a huge nerd like you and me. In casual conversation and in the heat of battle it’s not uncommon to hear Star Trek references, video game references, comic book references… he’s basically just a big, dorky, twisted kid on the inside and that makes him relatable. Well, kind of relatable.

Deadpool Is a Professed Canadian

Did you know that Deadpool is from Canada? Did you know that Wolverine is also Canadian? Here’s a bit of history: Deadpool (Wade Wilson) was diagnosed with cancer, and through a series of events that involve the Canadian military he ended up participating in a secret, superhero enhancement project (the Weapon X Program) as a test subject. During treatment, the effects of his cancer were completely suspended after having a healing agent implanted. That healing agent was derived from none other than Wolverine, another Canadian agent involved in the same program.

His Love Interests Include a Prostitute and… Death

His Love Interests Include a Prostitute and… Death

Yeah, you read that right. In the comics, Wilson fell in love with a young prostitute named Vanessa Carlysle, and had high hopes that they might eventually have a better life together. Without spoiling too much, I’ll say that Vanessa’s life was put into jeopardy after Deadpool failed a big mission, pissing off his client. A bit later in Deadpool’s comic book canon, he formed a semi-romantic relationship with Death itself / herself. Death, along with other abstract entities such as Eternity, Infinity, Lord Chaos, and Master Order, are sometimes personified at different points throughout Marvel comics. Death is sometimes represented as a female, who believes that she and Deadpool are kindred spirits.

He’s NSFW

He’s NSFW

If you know anything about Deadpool you know that he commits acts of violence indiscriminately, he loves to curse, and he has the libido of a teenage boy newly awakened to puberty. He’s definitely one of the more NSFW (not safe for work) characters in the Marvel canon, and doesn’t really belong on a kid’s TV show. Take this clip from Ultimate Spider-Man , for example. As Deadpool and Spidey approach an enemy objective Spider-Man warns of booby-traps, which sends Deadpool into a fit of laughter. Being a kid’s show, you expect a childish play on the word “booby.” Instead Deadpool, while wiping away tears of laughter, responds, “You said ‘traps.’” It went right over the heads of millions of kids, but we see what you did there, Deadpool. You gutter-brained assassin.
