Top 10 Old-School Wrestlers in Gaming

Top 10 Old-School Wrestlers in Gaming

WWE 2K16 just released its 2015 Hall of Fame Showcase DLC and it’s a stellar package of old school legends that have paved the way for the sport since the dawn of its existence. “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Jake “The Snake” Robert, The Rock, and Ric Flair are just a few of the classic wrestling heroes to headline the final DLC. This awesome edition of vintage characters got us thinking about the coolest WWE legends to ever grace the video game platform. Let’s take a look at the ten best.

Mankind (WWF Attitude – N64 & PlayStation)

Mankind (WWF Attitude – N64 & PlayStation)

Mankind ruled the ring during the mid to late 90’s with his bizarre demeanor and his epic finishing moves. WWF Attitude perfectly captured the hilariousness that surrounded Mankind and his old pal Socko. I just wish Mankind spent more time as his alter ego Cactus Jack and Dude Love rather than jamming that dirty sock down people’s throats.

Hulk Hogan (WWF Wrestlefest – Arcade)

Hulk Hogan (WWF Wrestlefest – Arcade)

Hulk Hogan was about the closest thing you could get to being a cheat in WWF Wrestlefest for the arcade. He was nearly impossible to beat and destroyed anyone that dared to challenge his title of WWF golden boy. WWF Wrestlefest is still the best wrestling game ever in my book, so it’s fitting that Hulk Hogan would grace the character selection screen of this classic title.

Diamond Dallas Page (WCW/nWo: Revenge – N64)

Diamond Dallas Page (WCW/nWo: Revenge – N64)

Technically this one doesn’t count under the tagline of greatest WWE characters, but I’ll make an exception for Diamond Dallas Page. DDP was a total beast in WCW/nWo: Revenge . I can remember absolutely dirt napping my buddies with this guy, especially when the Diamond Cutter was thrown at them. This game wouldn’t have been the same without his platinum locks and his epic set of moves.

Undertaker (WWE Smackdown vs Raw – PlayStation 2)

Undertaker (WWE Smackdown vs Raw – PlayStation 2)

Undertaker was an absolute beast in WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2006 on the PS2. He’s most noted for his stellar voiceover acting, but his character’s moves were also some of the best. When the title debuted in 2006, the Taker was at the pinnacle of his awesomeness, Tombstone and all.

The Rock (WWF Wrestlemania – N64)

The Rock (WWF Wrestlemania – N64)

The game was awful, the graphics were horrendous, and the replay value was dismal at best. However, The Rock was fantastic. His People’s Eyebrow was permanently plastered on face, which was hilariously awesome, and his overall persona was on point. The Rock made this crummy game worth the while.

Goldust (WWF Attitude – N64 & PlayStation)

Goldust (WWF Attitude – N64 & PlayStation)

Goldust was a total freak job back in the day. He might very well be the oddest character to ever step into the ring – his creepy face paint, the tight jet-black suit, and that epic wig were a staple of the sport during his time. His finishing move was pretty awesome in WWF Attitude on both the N64 and the original PlayStation, especially when it was done during a tag team match.

Steve Austin (WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain – PS2)

Steve Austin (WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain – PS2)

Stone Cold Steve Austin has a pretty sweet role in the PlayStation 2 version of WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain but his real greatness comes from his vintage Stone Colder Stunner finishing move. He has the attitude he’s been known for since entering into the WWE but we all know the Stunner is what really made WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain such an awesome game.

Triple H (WWF No Mercy – N64)

Triple H (WWF No Mercy – N64)

The Pedigree is all you need to know. Seriously, Triple H’s finishing move, The Pedigree, was the only reason to pick up this N64 gem. Sure the game was decent, but Triple H and his over the top finisher was pure greatness.

Andre The Giant (WWE All Stars (PS2/PS3/Wii/DS)

Andre The Giant (WWE All Stars (PS2/PS3/Wii/DS)

This steroid-infused slug feast hosted a wealth of famous WWE superstars from early legends to the current fan favorites. Andre The Giant was the major highlight of this 2013 release with his enormous stature and his vintage Giant Elbow Drop.

Shawn Michaels (WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game Super NES)

Shawn Michaels (WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game Super NES)

Shawn Michaels is without a doubt the greatest superstar to ever emerge from the WWE. Not only did Michaels have the best entrance music in the history of sports, but he also had the best finishing move – Sweet Chin Music. WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game for the Super NES allowed players to drop the world’s best side kick upside the jaws of unsuspecting foes. Shawn Michaels goes down as the best playable WWE character ever.
