Top 10 Sights from the Floor of This Year’s E3

Top 10 Sights from the Floor of This Year’s E3

Every E3 is memorable in its own way. It’s a shock and awe kind of event, after all. Companies want to get as much attention as possible for their games. Making sure they have flashy spectacles to enjoy is part of that experience. You don’t remember a booth that only offered an array of demo stations. The ones that stand out make the biggest impression.

E3 2016 was full of these kinds of moments. Whether it was with a memorable person, place, or thing, plenty of companies went above and beyond to keep their titles on our minds. These 10 were the most eye-catching features you could see.

Crash Bandicoot

Crash Bandicoot

This guy may be little, but he made quite a splash. Crash Bandicoot is 20 years old this year! To celebrate, his games are being remastered and he’s a Skylanders Imaginators sensei. People who found their way to Activision’s meeting rooms could see an in-progress prototype of his figure. Diminutive as he was, you can’t deny the wonderful feeling that comes from seeing that smile again.

Awesome Cars

Awesome Cars

With the racing games that appear at E3, you have to expect some cars at the show. And trust me, E3 2016 didn’t disappoint. The DOOM -branded car that appeared in the Angie’s List Grand Prix and Indianapolis 500 was parked outside the South Hall entrance to the Los Angeles Convention Center. A Lamborghini Centenario, the Forza Horizon 3 cover car, was on a turntable at the Microsoft booth. There was even a food truck offering gator bites and jambalaya outside the West Hall LACC entrance! Cars were everywhere!

Cosplay

Cosplay

Each year, fewer and fewer booth babes have appeared at E3. E3 2016 offered the most scant collection of scantily clad men and women. People who passed by the Sony booth had a chance of seeing Kat from Gravity Rush 2 . XSEED had a woman cosplaying as Shantae, since they’re publishing Shantae: Half-Genie Hero . Most impressive was the Horizon: Zero Dawn Walker. This dude stalked the street outside of the Los Angeles Convention Center and was quite intimidating! There weren’t as many people dressed up this year, but those who were worked it.

Gwent

Gwent

Way up in CD Projekt’s E3 2016 meeting room was a thing of beauty. The company made and brought an actual Gwent table to the show. Official cards were placed in appropriate positions, with various tokens and accents added for extra authenticity. It was a beautiful thing and made more than a few people want their own decks or tables!

Lego

Lego

Ever since Warner Bros. got into the Lego-based video game business, it’s had various displays made of the iconic bricks at its E3 booths. This year, there was a massive landmass inspired by Lego Worlds . Nathan Sawaya, a Lego Certified Professional, put together a world with multiple biomes. You could see a candy castle, erupting volcando, gigantic mushroom land, desert/car graveyard, snowy mountains, pyramids, and wilderness. It was an extraordinarily detailed piece that begged you to come over and take a closer look.

Ubisoft

Ubisoft

Ubisoft’s E3 booth was notable for its size and scope. With EA and Activision’s absence, we needed a booth that blew our minds with the sheer size of it. Ubisoft stepped up. It was one of the largest locations in LACC’s South Hall, and someone could practically get lost in all of its spheres as they searched for the game or theater they wanted.

Bethesda

Bethesda

Bethesda’s booth at E3 2016 was something of a museum. It was possible to pass from exhibit to exhibit, seeing references to and recreations of items from games like Dishonored 2, The Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 4 , and Prey . It was the sort of place you took your time walking through, taking in every element, in the hopes you might better understand something about the virtual worlds as you did. While it wasn’t as exciting or engaging as some, it worked well as an exhibition of things we’ve known and loved before.

Capcom

Capcom

Capcom used its E3 2016 booth to call attention to its three major games. Interested in Resident Evil VII ? There was a haunted house with a demo experience to explore, complete with a locked gate referencing its Japanese name. Ready to go on a hunt? There was a giant blimp promoting Monster Hunter Generations . Feel like defending the innocent? Phoenix Wright’ s courtroom was perfectly recreated, complete with a space for someone to take the stand. It did a great job of bringing scenes from our favorite series to life.

2K Games

2K Games

Sometimes, E3 booth successfully capture a moment in time. They recreate an environment and bring it to life. 2K Games did that for Mafia III . A good portion of its booth was dedicated to bringing New Bordeaux, the game’s version of New Orleans, to life. It was a two-story building, with 2K staff sometimes tossing beads from the upper deck to visitors below. An R&B band appeared to sing and play some classic 1960’s tunes in the “square.” A storefront was filled with retro TVs, and neon signs advertised services like palm readings. It made Mafia III come to life.

Nintendo

Nintendo

Nintendo went above and beyond for E3 2016. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wilds booth was exceptional. It had gorgeous recreations of the game’s hero, Link, and monsters like the moblins and guardian. You could trigger pressure plates to animate objects. The time of day changed and weather patterns shifted. It was the most detailed booth at E3, and everyone who was fortunate enough to go inside was lucky to enjoy that experience.
