Top 10 Comic Baddies Who Need Their Own Flick

Top 10 Comic Baddies Who Need Their Own Flick

Suicide Squad may be a divisive movie, but it offers something comic book fans have been wanting from media adaptations. Graphic novels are filled with all sorts of villainous figures. These are intricate characters that have sides to them that aren’t explored in big or prominent ways. Rather, we usually only get to see them as a foil for heroes. They aren’t the primary focus on big or small screens.

Now that comics are being tapped for larger projects, there’s an opportunity to remedy that. DC Comics’ and Marvel’s libraries are filled with baddies who deserve more attention. These 10 characters and groups should get what’s coming to them – a starring role!

Nekron

Nekron

Zombies are hot right now. Superheroes are, too. Why not combine them? Nekron is a DC villain that uses his powers to try and reach Earth. He does so by creating the Black Lantern Corps, an undead army of people and fallen heroes who bend to his will. We haven’t had a good Green Lantern movie yet. One where the Green Lantern and some other DC heroes must face off against their own, manipulated by Nekron, could be quite a tale! A good villain can make you excited about a superhero again.

Venom

Venom

A Venom movie is supposedly being made. Allegedly it’s happening, with Alex Kurtzman writing and directing it. Yet, it’s been over a year since we’ve heard anything about it. Which is a shame, because this symbiote can take a good person and turn them bad. Seeing that sort of downfall could make for an intriguing movie. He didn’t get the time he deserved in Spider-Man 3 , so let’s hope his movie actually gets made and does the character justice.

Darkseid and his Elite

Darkseid and his Elite

The Justice League is going to need some pretty impressive villains to battle. After all, it’s a team of superheroes. Sending them after just one enemy might be wasteful. If we end up getting multiple movies, it could be a perfect opportunity to bring in Darkseid’s Elite. This is a villainous group led by Darkseid, one of Superman’s most powerful enemies. Each one of his minions is strong enough to pose a threat to a Justice League hero. A few have already made appearances in modern adaptations like Smallville , where Desaad, Glorious Godfrey, Granny Goodness, and Titan showed up. There’s a precedent for these baddies in the cinematic and small-screen universe. Now’s a good time for them to make a comeback.

Mystique

Mystique

Okay, let’s be honest here. Technically, Mystique has stolen the show in several Marvel movies. Doesn’t that mean she should get a solo outing? This clandestine character is charismatic and interesting. While her powers aren’t as flashy as some, they allow for some interesting think-pieces. A film noir sort of movie, focusing on infiltration to achieve her means, would offer an interesting counterpoint to the more flashy superhero movies we’ve seen as of late.

Jokerz

Jokerz

The Joker and Harley Quinn are so hot right now, thanks to Suicide Squad . We already know she’s going to get her own spin-off movie. Know what would make things more interesting? If the Jokerz were also tossed into the mix. They’re a group of villains inspired by the Joker and his antics. While often relegated to roles in the DC animated universe, they were also part of the Gotham City Imposters game. It’d be interesting to see how the Joker and Harley would make use of minions dedicated to their cause, right? Flesh out their backstories a bit, so they aren’t just a bunch of goofy-looking punks doing whatever Mister J tells them to.

Marauders

Marauders

The Marauders are one of the most dangerous groups in the Marvel universe. This team of mutants, headed up by Mister Sinister, is a group of assassins. They take out their own kind for Sinister’s needs. Why? Sometimes to purify the genetic gene pool. In other cases, to take potentially valuable subjects, like Nathan Summers, for his own means. They’d make a perfect villain for a new X-Men movie or TV show, simply because their motives would cause debate and unrest within an entire group of superpowered individuals. It’d be a civil war, if you will.

Magneto

Magneto

Magneto is amazing. This is a man who has faced racism on many fronts. He was sent to a concentration camp during World War II because he was Jewish. He’s been discriminated against for being a mutant. There are times when he’s tried to see the good in the world, working with Dr. Charles Xavier to teach and help young mutants. There are other times when he’s thought segregation and violence in favor of mutants was the only answer. He deserves his own movie exploring his past and present. Instead, X-Men Origins: Magneto was cancelled.

If Magneto doesn’t get a solo chance to shine, at least we’ve been able to see Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender play him!

Catwoman

Catwoman

Catwoman deserves a good movie. That Halle Berry flick doesn’t count. This is an amazing character who is one of DC Comics’ most iconic figures. She’s been well represented in shows like Gotham and movies like The Dark Knight Rises . This is a legend that should be able to carry her own flick, and someone out there should be able to tell her story the right way. Maybe now that Harley Quinn is getting her own film, Catwoman will have a chance, too.

Crime Syndicate

Crime Syndicate

Heroes often have counterparts in comics that show what life would have been like had they been evil, rather than good. DC Comics’ Crime Syndicate, also known as the Crime Syndicate of America, are the anti-Justice League. Each one is a warped version of a hero we know and love. The original team had Ultraman, a version of Superman who was a human with anti-Kryptonite superpowers; Superwoman, a version of Lois Lane who has powers similar to Wonder Woman; Owlman, a mind-controlling Thomas Wayne Jr.; Johnny Quick, a slower version of the Flash that relies on a helmet and “speed juice”; and Power Ring, a take on Green Lantern with a ring containing the spirit Volthoom. We’re used to heroic versions of our favorite characters with minor flaws. Imagine getting to see more of iconic characters who take the good things they’ve been given and use them for evil.

At the very least, give us a show following Ultraman, Superwoman, and Owlman. These three incredibly flawed characters and their disturbing love triangle would result in quite an interesting series.

Emma Frost

Emma Frost

Emma Frost, also known as the White Queen, has been part of Marvel’s X-Men line since 1980. She’s a deeply nuanced character who deserves her own series. Why? Because she’s constantly evolving in the comics. And I’m not just talking about her powers, since she went from being a telepath to also developing a diamond form. This is a woman who began as a supervillain, a member of the Hellfire Club, and later reformed. A TV series, perhaps akin to Netflix’s Jessica Jones , would be a wonderful way to chart her journey.
