Top 5 Switch Games Nintendo Should Announce

Top 5 Switch Games Nintendo Should Announce

The launch of the Switch is less than a month away and, if preorders for the system are any indication, it will have a lucrative start out of the gate. When nestling their fresh Nintendo console box between embraced arms, you can expect nearly every new owner will also be dangling a bag holding The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild . But, besides the lust for Link that burns deep in hearts of many Nintendo enthusiasts, the rest of the launch lineup is comprised of previously-released indie titles and some mediocre, glorified tech demos. We know Super Mario Odyssey , Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , and Splatoon 2 are on the way, but frankly, Nintendo needs to give us more. Even early announcements on games just beginning development could tip the scales for those on the fence who are waiting to see the game list grow before grabbing a Switch. Here are five games that would absolutely get people excited for the system at the mere mention of one of them coming to the console.

Metroid Prime

Metroid Prime

Nintendo fans have been clamoring for a new Metroid Prime for years, and no, Metroid Prime: Federation Force does not count. I’m talking about a true first-person, action-adventure shooter with clever puzzles led by one of the best female protagonists in gaming. The Metroid Prime series garnered tons of acclaim, with gameplay that truly separates it from any other FPS out there. The fact that we didn’t see Samus embark on her own adventure on the Wii U was a massive kick in the Varia Suit for fans. It has been almost 10 years since the last real Prime game! 10! That’s far too long. I guarantee if Nintendo were to announce a new Metroid Prime game today, the hype for Link would shrink to the size of a Cucco. Make it happen Nintendo. Now!

Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong Country

The Donkey Kong Country series will always be part of the debate involving the best 2D platformers, due to its role as both as a graphical pioneer and the savior of the Super NES. They’re all great, from the original through Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze , which received a stellar review score from yours truly and, in my estimation, is one of the most challenging and masterfully designed platformers ever made. A new banana-saving adventuring from the best red-tied primate in the biz would capture a huge audience, appealing to many different gamer types. Here’s the snag though, both the Donkey Kong Country and Metroid Prime series are developed by Retro Studios, so the chances of seeing both in development together are likely pipe dreams. Retro has been virtually silent for the past two years, though. Wikipedia shows the studio has something in development, but what will it be and how long will Nintendo keep us in the dark?

Wario Ware

Wario Ware

Let’s be honest here, there are very few people (even the Nintendo faithful) excited about 1-2 Switch . We all know it’s Nintendo’s way of showing off different gameplay aspects of the Switch, much like Wii Play did for the Wii, but everyone agrees it should have been a pack-in sold with the system. If Nintendo truly wants to show of the versatility of the Switch’s unique controls, Wario Ware is the ideal template. Its blend of fast-paced microgames and hilariously quirky style is an absolute perfect fit for both living room hijinks and goofiness on the go. Just think of the crowd you would attract playing a Wario Ware game in the cafeteria or at the park! The laughter would be unstoppable. The series has had success on both home and handheld consoles, so having a Wario Ware game on the Switch is an absolute must.

South Park: The Fractured but Whole

South Park: The Fractured but Whole

Though a Wario Ware game would have its oddities, if Nintendo really wants to show it can embrace the crudeness, South Park: The Fractured but Whole would be an ideal addition to the Switch library. The first game of the series, South Park: The Stick of Truth , was not only a decent open-world RPG, but it paid extreme reverence to the lore of the cartoon series, leaving all the humor and spot-on animation intact. Being developed and published by Ubisoft, we can make a fair assumption that this game will see the light of day on the Switch, thanks to the company’s strong support for Nintendo’s new console. Also, I don’t see the Big N turning it down due to its mature themes, considering it already has a game like The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ releasing alongside the Switch. The real question is whether South Park: The Fractured but Whole would be ready for the Switch when the game launches, or if development for the new console would push it to a later date, losing much of its launch hype. We’ll see.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2

When it comes to prominent third-party developers, Rockstar Games needs no introduction. In fact, the makers of the Grand Theft Auto series can snub any gaming convention (which they consistently do) and still manage to sell their games by the millions. As more information emerges about their open-world wild western sequel to Red Dead Redemption , the hype will only mushroom. You can bet it will be at the top of most people’s must buy list. There are rumors flying around that Rockstar is supporting the Switch, and the publisher has put some of its past games of Nintendo consoles and handhelds, so having Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Switch is not completely out of the realm of possibility. This would be an astronomical boon to Nintendo’s lineup, with arguably the most anticipated game making a strong statement about third-party support for the Switch.
