Top 8 “What the F#%K” Games of All Time

Top 8 “What the F#%K” Games of All Time

Video game plots can be confusing; it’s just a given. When you’re trying to cram an entire universe into a set number of hours of playtime, it’s generally the case that you have to do one of two things. You either cut certain things out that might have lent more depth to the game. Or, as is more often the case, you try to shove as many plot points, back stories, and characters/locations in as you can. This often leads to a bit of an information overload. For some though, this overload just blows our minds. Here’s our top eight games that made us say, “What the f***?!”

Lisa

Lisa

This is a personal favorite of mine and will always warrant a spot on any, “What the hell is going on here?” list. Lisa is the story of a post-apocalyptic world that is entirely populated by men. One man finds a baby in the middle of nowhere and discovers that he is a she. This should be impossible! While that all sounds fairly straightforward, Lisa has a bizarre subplot that can be super confusing. There are many moments within the game that are not fully explained. Like who is Lisa? Guess you’ll just have to play to find out.

Undertale

Undertale

Arguably one of the biggest breakout stars in indie gaming in recent years, Undertale is still one of the first games I think of when I’m talking about games I don’t understand whatsoever. There are so many vague points to this game, and fans have been left open to theorize all they want. I thoroughly enjoyed playing Undertale , it was a treat to play, and I was completely fine not understanding every little moment. And yet, I still say WTF?

NieR Series

NieR Series

NieR: Automata is the most recent addition to Yoko Taro’s NieR series. These games as a whole tend to leave plenty of room for players to scratch their heads. At the very least, it’s incredibly WTF that Yoko Taro conducts interviews in cosplay of one of the game’s characters, Emil/No. 7. The character’s bizarre design translates well to Yoko Taro’s eccentric personality, which always manages to seep into his games.

BioShock Series

BioShock Series

The BioShock series will go down through time as one of the most interesting and playable game series of all time. We’ve got to admit to ourselves though, they can get a little weird. The ending of BioShock Infinite alone is an example of this. Take into consideration the fact that the games are supposed to be related, and you’ve got plenty of ammo for conspiracy theories. The fact that we’ve been able to talk about these games for years after their releases is a testament to their power.

Myst Series

Myst Series

I myself played a knock-off version of the Myst series called Schizm: Mysterious Journey . They are in fact, basically the same games though. They’re all mysterious adventure/puzzle games. I can remember even now not having a single clue what the overarching story was to these games. Even though they’re fun to play, and stretch your brain muscles with the puzzles, you can’t help but wonder what the f*** is going on in the minds of their creators.

Death Stranding

Death Stranding

In comes the future release, semi-bonus round of our list of WTF games. Death Stranding is Hideo Kojima’s upcoming open world action video game. It’s already got some big names featured in it, like Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Guillermo del Toro. There’s even talk that Emma Watson might play some role in the game. These names are the most solid thing we know about the game thus far, however. Kojima references metaphors of ropes and sticks but that frankly doesn’t tell us anything about what the game will be like or what it will mean. What does it all mean?!

F.E.A.R.

F.E.A.R.

There are so many people who have struggled to understand F.E.A.R. , particularly the ending. It’s not uncommon to see someone say, “Played through this game three times and I finally just now feel like I understand what’s going on.” And that’s if you’re one of the lucky ones. Much like Mary, there’s something about Alma. We just can’t figure it out. Twelve years after this game has released I still hear people say, “Yeah I was so confused by that one.”

BlazBlue Series

BlazBlue Series

Rounding out our list of games that make us say “What the f***?!” I’ve got the BlazBlue series. It’s a fighting video game series that’s up there with Street Fighter and Soulcaliber . I’ve cosplayed as a character from this series (Taokaka), and even I have a hard time explaining to people what she’s all about, “Uhh… She’s a cat girl that’s in this fighting game called BlazBlue . She really loves food?” There are so many moving parts in BlazBlue , and not only are there the main games, the series also expands into light novels, manga, drama CDs, anime, and spin off games. If you like fighting games, they’re super fun to play alone or with friends, just don’t expect to understand much too deeply.
