7 Weird, Wild and Wonderful Fan-made Games

7 Weird, Wild and Wonderful Fan-made Games

The internet is a weird, wide, and wonderful place. There’s something for everyone from every walk of life. For us gamers, we’ve got news, reviews, free-to-play online games, and so very much more. Another thing the internet is a great for is a source of fan-made games! There are so many that have been made throughout the years that were just crying for attention. We’ve compiled a few here for you!

Minetest

Minetest

What’s this? Is it Minecraft ? How dare they? Well get your panties out of their bunch; it’s all right. This is Minetest , a fan-made, open-source, spiritual successor to Minecraft ! (Say that five times fast!) This game has everything we know and love from our favorite blocky sandbox game and more! The best part for those of us not made of money? It’s free!

Black Mesa

Black Mesa

This entry in our list will be very familiar to those in the right circles. Black Mesa initially released in 2012 and was continuing to receive updates on Steam even in 2016. While it started as a fan-made project, Black Mesa eventually became so much more. The remaster/recreation of Half Life by Crowbar Collective got official sanction from Valve for its release. The Legacy version of the game is available for download from many places online, with the official Steam release still in Early Access.

DMCA’s Sky

DMCA’s Sky

DMCA’s Sky was previously known as No Mario’s Sky until it received a DMCA notice. That sparked the game’s name change, along with a few cosmetic changes. Creators ASMB Games took popular tropes from No Man’s Sky and Super Mario Bros. and mashed them together. No Mario’s Sky allows you to fly a ship to different planets and, upon landing, participate in Super Mario -like platforming levels.

Garry’s Mod

Garry’s Mod

Garry’s Mod , oh Garry’s Mod . This is the one entry in our list that we feel needs no introduction. We’ll give you one anyway though. Garry’s Mod was originally a mod for Half Life that very quickly spiraled out of control. Or into control? It depends on who you ask, I suppose. Garry’s Mod might have been a mod to begin with, but it’s become its own weird, wacky, and wonderful thing in its own right.

El Dewrito

El Dewrito

Remember that Halo Online game that was only released in Russia and has been shut down? You’d do well to kindly remember that some master fans of the game created their own version that’s playable outside of the country of origin. El Dewrito, as it was called, allowed fans the world over to check out Halo Online . This game is still being updated, so you still have plenty of chance to check it out!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2D

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2D

This game is sure to strike a cord with modern audiences and old fans alike. With the popularity of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild going through the roof, we have another option for you to get your fix. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2D takes the classic game and (from scratch) makes it into a 2D re-imagining. The game is currently in production, but will be available for free hopefully this June!

Pokemon Uranium

Pokemon Uranium

We’ve reached the end of our list, my friends. The top entry is here for many reasons, one being that it was in development for nine years (count ’em), it was downloaded more than 1.5 million times, and it’s an awesome game to boot. Pokemon Uranium was a labor of love and determination. While it was taken down by Nintendo due to copyright infringements, it has still been played by innumerable amounts of players. That’s pretty awesome.
