Top 10 Most Anticipated Games of 2017

Top 10 Most Anticipated Games of 2017

2017 has been a hell of a ride so far, with approximately a billion excellent games already. But now that the front-heavy wave of AAA games is out, what next? Here’s a list of what I’m looking forward to so far, in AAA and everything in-between. Which means you should be looking forward to these ten too!

Puyo Puyo Tetris

Puyo Puyo Tetris

I’ve already played some Puyo Puyo Tetris via the Japanese eShop demo on the Nintendo Switch, and it’s a hoot. The different modes, 4-player local multiplayer even in tabletop mode, and goofy cast of characters make casual play super appealing. Having access to the story mode in English will be great for solo play. Puyo Puyo seems a little overpowered compared to Tetris , but the mode in which players have to deal with swapping back and forth every 30 seconds is a blast.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 was great, but not all there. This new version, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch, fills that in with the overhauled Battle Mode and adds even more characters! This, combined with the different modes of play on the new hardware, should make it a hit. Testing out the wireless LAN play with my friends on multiple Switch units will definitely be a gaming highlight this year.

Prey

Prey

This whole Bethesda shooter thing is getting out of control. I never played the original Prey , but this dark, sci-fi shooter with what looks like creative guns, instead of the usual bullets, has me super intrigued. It seems a little too BioShock -y to me, but as long as it doesn’t have baby-level political commentary making me feel secondhand embarassment for the writers, Prey should be a good time.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

I’ll admit to not being someone who actually cares about Crash Bandicoot that much, if at all. That said, I did enjoy them once upon a time, and I’m morbidly curious about how this Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy collection ends up. It could be an awesome homage to a distinct era of gaming history. Or it could be a waste of time.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

I’m all about the PlayStation 4’s big chunk of remasters and re-releases, and the new Final Fantasy XII port is no exception. This was a weird game that came out as Square Enix was going through huge changes as a developer, and this chance to revisit it along with unfamiliar new content should be worthwhile. Plus, the cover art on the Steelbook edition is so good!

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

I wasn’t too hot on Danganronpa 2 , but I’m still riding on the wave from the first game enough that seeing the series crop up again has my interest. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony could be great or it could totally suck. But this will be the best game to give us a huge dose of over the top, surreal Japanese weirdness.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is the big, marquee game of the latter half of 2017, for sure. The first game was a constant source of controversy, but people keep caring about it. Intensely. I’m curious enough to see what Bungie learned from its harrowing experiences with the first game, and how its sequel will be accepted in the eyes of the fanbase.

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite

Oh man, I am so ridiculously excited about this. Capcom never ceases to amaze with its Marvel vs. Capcom series games. The drip-feed of character reveals for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will produce enough hype to power a small city, assuming it doesn’t all get leaked again. The significant changes to gameplay on the table also have me intrigued about how this one works out.

Sonic Mania

Sonic Mania

I’m so into Sonic Mania somehow? It’s like a small part of my irrational childhood hype that will never leave me alone, no matter how vigorously I try to rub it off. Except, this time, it seems like it is a Sonic the Hedgehog classic-style game that will be actually good. For real, I mean it! The Sonic Cycle just might be over.

Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey

This one’s a no-brainer. A semi-open-world Super Mario game? Are you kidding? It looks like a mix between Super Mario 64 and Sonic Adventure , which sounds awful and incredible at the same time. I’m not too keen on the hat thing, but we’ll see how it plays into all the zany Mario acrobatics. The way he used it to extend his jumping length in the trailer was impressive!
