Puny Mortals, Kneel Before these Top 7 Gaming Gods!

Puny Mortals, Kneel Before these Top 7 Gaming Gods!

The most powerful magic in this world is the ability video games have to give us experiences we’d never have in reality. We can visit locations we’d never dream of seeing in person. We can take on roles and become people we could never be. They give us strength and power that don’t exist in our world. They also let us interact with (and sometimes become) gods. This is the pinnacle of impossible things.

So here are seven different games that either allow you to be a god or bring you face-to-face with them.

Black & White

Black & White

Let’s start off with a game that puts the player in the hot seat. The Black & White franchise is still highly considered one of the best known “god games” on the market. You are given all-seeing, all-knowing, and ultimate power. Your subjects worship your very existence and you can reward or punish them as you see fit. Black & White 2 was my personal favorite, but the series as a whole is incredibly memorable for its gameplay. This was also the first game that managed to creep under my skin with its eerie whispers of “Death” every time a villager died.

Dark Souls

Dark Souls

One of the most memorable characters in all of Dark Souls for me was Gwynevere. In a world where darkness reigns, her unbelievably beautiful body was a welcome sight. I have never understood macrophilia, but for a split second Gwynevere tempted my resolve. She’s a goddess of the sun and the daughter of Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight. While Gwynevere is a minor character, her father (as Dark Souls fans well know), is a much mightier force to face. With Gwynevere’s presence and Gwyn’s boss battle, this list simply wouldn’t be complete without Dark Souls .

Bayonetta

Bayonetta

If ever there was going to be a match for the fantastically beautiful, and killer Bayonetta, it would be the creator of the universe. Jubileus is the final boss in the original Bayonetta , and she just goes to show that gods will not go down without a fight. This final battle in Bayonetta takes place across five different stages and really tests the player’s skill. For me, Jubileus tops the list of memorable fights involving a god. But there are other games that feature even more gods, so let’s keep going.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins

Assassin’s Creed: Origins

As we all well know, Assassin’s Creed: Origins takes place in Ancient Egypt. This was a time heralded over by a pantheon of gods. Assassin’s Creed: Origins Trials of the Gods allows you to test your mettle against up to three of these particular deities. There’s Anubis, Sobek, and Sekhmet. Anubis, the jackal-headed god, is one of the most well-known Egyptian gods, and he was the god of embalming and the dead. Sobek had the head of a Nile crocodile and was lord of pharaonic power, fertility, military prowess, and protection from the dangers of the Nile. Finally, there’s Sekhmet, who was a warrior goddess with the head of a lioness. She was also worshiped as a goddess of healing. These three gods make for intense foes in Assassin’s Creed: Origins .

Okami

Okami

Okami really earns its place on this list as a game that not only allows you to play a god, but also puts you in contact with plenty of others. The player character in Okami is Amaterasu, based on the Japanese goddess of the sun and universe by the same name. In Okami , she is depicted as a white wolf with bright red markings. She’s the master of the Celestial Brush, which puts her in contact with all of its various gods. They are as follows: Yomigami, Tachigami, Hanagami, Bakugami, Yumigami, Nuregami, Kazegami, Moegami, Kasugami, Kabegami, Gekigami, and Itegami. Between all of these gods and Amaterasu, it’s clear that Okami well and truly belongs on this list.

The Elder Scrolls

The Elder Scrolls

There is a lot going on in The Elder Scrolls series, but always lurking in the background are the universe’s various gods. Plenty of quests are devoted and related to these various deities. There are also shrines and temples to visit within the games. There’s even the dragon Alduin, who represents the Nordic God of Destruction in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim . The main gods in The Elder Scrolls franchise are broken down into the Nine Divines and the Daedric Gods/Princes. Daedra clearly have all the fun though, as their questlines are generally the most quirky and enjoyable.

God of War

God of War

While there are plenty of games that feature gods, God of War has to be declared the winner. The player character, Kratos, takes Ares’ place and becomes the god of war. He is mentored by and serves the gods on many occasions, but he also kills plenty of them too. God of War, as a franchise, combines all of the gods of Olympus, other Greek mythological heroes, characters, and Titans. The most recent entry even brings Norse gods into the mix. As if there weren’t enough gods to keep track of already, right? Love it or hate it, God of War is the quintessential video game featuring gods.

Which title from our video games god is your favorite? Is there one game in particular that you’re really sad to see missing? Let’s talk about it in the comments section below!
