8 Games That Prove Mobile is Awesome in 2018

8 Games That Prove Mobile is Awesome in 2018

Throughout the history of video games, various platforms have come and gone. Some have been much more successful than others, but they all hold their place in history. The Virtual Boy might have been a misstep, but now the HTC Vive is super popular. Now, it would appear the cell phone is starting to hold its own. Not only are there plenty of smaller indie titles available to enjoy, but even AAA games are finding a home on mobiles. Let’s take a look at eight of those fantastic games.

Trap Adventure 2

Trap Adventure 2

As many of my regular readers will know, I like to put in a little bonus round from time to time. I couldn’t resist in this list of fantastic mobile titles and had to bring up Trap Adventure 2 . If you haven’t seen any hilarious Trap Adventure 2 gifs or videos, you’re doing yourself a serious disservice. This is a mobile game that exists purely to frustrate and spark rage. It deserves a place on this list of more well-known games because of its innovation and popularity. Many famous YouTube and Twitch streamers have gotten their hands on this game, and (in many cases) subsequently rage quit. If you can fight the anger, Trap Adventure 2 is actually a challenging platformer that will test your mettle.

Fallout Shelter

Fallout Shelter

If there’s any one mobile game that I’ve vehemently kept around in my life, it’s Fallout Shelter . This game has traveled with me between a bevy of different phones and tablets. It’s a great time waster when you’re sitting alone waiting for someone or doing your business in the bathroom. It’s also a really great mobile version of a beloved franchise. You won’t get any first person shooter action in Fallout Shelter , but the quests outside of the bomb shelter actually do include some interesting stories. With Fallout Shelter , Bethesda proved that they could combine casual mobile gaming and an awesome franchise effectively.

Oxenfree

Oxenfree

Oxenfree was a breakout star when it was released by developer Night School Studio. It was a genuinely unique title, with interesting gameplay and an attention-grabbing story. The mobile version of the game took everything that everyone knew and loved from the PC and console version and just made it fit in your pocket. All of the action, and the story is exactly the same. It proved to many naysayers that great games can be played equally well on a cell phone or tablet screen.

Fortnite

Fortnite

A battle of epic proportions is happening on cell phones everywhere. Everyone has been struggling to decide which battle royale was better. As you’re seeing Fortnite first, it’s safe to say I’ve put my vote in the bucket. Fortnite is a very bubbly looking co-op sandbox survival game that’s been enjoying insane levels of popularity. The mobile version is almost equally popular, but not quite as easy to play as its counterparts. Even still, it’s enjoying an insane cult following, and many kids who come from families who can’t afford PCs or consoles, are enjoying it.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is our other battle royale game that proves that even the big boys can kick it on mobile. From its inception, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has been insanely popular, and adding a mobile version has only added more fuel to the flame. Those who regularly play on a PC or console, but don’t want to miss out on any of the action, can keep playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on the go. The same is true for those who would simply just rather play on a mobile device. This is an intensely popular game all around, and the fact that it’s thriving even on cell phones and tablets proves yet again that uber popular and quality games can have a home on those devices.

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft has been vastly popular from its inception, and it has held its head high as one of the most highly rated mobile games out there. It’s the pinnacle of success when it comes to taking an existing franchise and making it relevant to a new audience. But it also appeals to previous fans of World of Warcraft . Hearthstone is also one of the best free-to-play collectible card games out on the market. So by and large, it’s one of the best AAA mobile games out there.

Rockstar Games Mobile

Rockstar Games Mobile

It might seem unfair, in many ways, to lump an entire developer’s mobile library into one entry, but Rockstar has been killing it. They have tons of successful ports of their famous franchises, so they earned their spot on this list by quantity and quality. Rockstar’s mobile games library includes all of the following: Bully: Anniversary Edition , Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories , GTA: San Andreas , GTA III , GTA: Vice City , Max Payne , and GTA: Chinatown Wars . If you want AAA gaming on the go, you can’t go wrong with Rockstar.

Square Enix Mobile

Square Enix Mobile

Much like Rockstar games, Square Enix has been another company absolutely dominating the mobile field. They beat out Rockstar in pure quantity, but they’ve also had some really quality (and popular) mobile titles over the years, into the present and future! Square Enix has released two dozen Final Fantasy games on mobile in North America alone (even more elsewhere). These include the super popular Mobius Final Fantasy , Dissidia Final Fantasy , and Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition (which put the entire game in the palm of your hand). Plenty of Dragon Quest games have also been ported to mobile. Square Enix has also released popular titles like Chrono Trigger , Chaos Rings , Deus Ex: The Fall , Tomb Raider ( 1 and 2 ), the Go series ( Hitman Go , Lara Croft Go , and Deus Ex Go ), Hitman: Sniper , and Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders . This isn’t even an exhaustive list! So needless to say, Square Enix has proven time and again that AAAs absolutely have their place on mobiles.
