Top 7 Evil Versions of Video Game Characters

Top 7 Evil Versions of Video Game Characters

The concept of good and evil is hardly ever as black and white as we’d like it to be. In the realm of video games, the line is more distinctly drawn in the sand. Sure, there are plenty of multi-faceted game characters out there, some who might walk the line between good and bad. But in most cases, they’re either mostly good, or mostly bad.

What if those heroes we know and love suddenly woke up one day and decided they couldn’t take it anymore? What if they grew tired of saving everyone? We wanted to take a look today at what a number of heroes would be like if they went to the side of the villains.

Mario

Mario

Mario is a generally a well liked video game character. He’s been around for a very long time, and practically everyone around the world knows his name. They also know that he’s the quintessential good guy. Mario is constantly saving Princess Peach from the clutches of villains. But what if he decided not to do that one day? What if Mario became the bad guy? Maybe he’d have her locked in a dungeon, to prevent anyone from stealing her away. Perhaps Mario would be awful to Toad or Yoshi, rather than being friends with them. A bad Mario would be a terrifying thing to consider.

Phoenix Wright

Phoenix Wright

In the Phoenix Wright franchise, Phoenix is not just the main character, but also a seeker of truth and defender of justice. But what if he snapped and became a criminal himself? I mean, he has been accused of murder and put on trial multiple times. Someone with intimate knowledge of the law could know how to commit and cover up crimes.

It’s also possible that Phoenix could go to the other side and become a prosecutor, rather than a defense attorney. Instead of seeking to protect his clients, Phoenix might become a ruthless man who only cares about a guilty verdict.

Considering Phoenix’s delightfully lovable nature, I’d hate to imagine him as a villain.

Lee Everett

Lee Everett

Technically, The Walking Dead ‘s Lee was a bad guy before the apocalypse. He killed his wife’s lover. But post-zombies-running-everywhere, people have an opportunity to make Lee a good person. He cares for Clementine, and he does his best to protect her and everyone that he knows.

What if Lee had continued to be a murderer? What if the death of his wife’s lover merely spurred him on to kill even more people? And with zombies all around, it would be easy to be chaotic and out for his own survival. It would be kind of hard to convict a serial killer when there’s a zombie apocalypse on.

Say he took Clementine under his wing and turned her into a murderer as well? They wouldn’t have many problems surviving doomsday if they took what they needed and refused to support other survivors. It would have made for a very interesting story, but might not have given us the fantastic Lee/Clementine relationship we all enjoyed.

William J. Blazkowicz

William J. Blazkowicz

B.J. Blazkowicz is an all American badass in Wolfenstein . He’d do anything to protect the freedom of his country, and doesn’t mind bashing in heads to do it. But what if B.J.’s life had taken a very different turn? What if instead of being a good ol’ American boy, he became a Nazi? Out of any video game alternative universe, I think this one would shock people quite a bit. It’d be odd to see freedom fighting B.J. battling on the side of his sworn enemies.

Lara Croft

Lara Croft

Lara Croft is about as typical a video game hero as you can get. Nearly any good guy list is going to include her. Even in her less confident, inexperienced Crystal Dynamics trilogy days, Lara still fights on the side of good. So what would the world be like if she decided to be a bad guy? Would she be an assassin? A thief? Why not both? Lara would be a force to reckon with if she took up the evil villain mantle. Almost certainly, people and valuable things would disappear wherever she went.

Gordon Freeman

Gordon Freeman

Gordon Freeman is a highly treasured hero. He’s the lead in the Half-Life series and the protector against alien invaders. The planet would have been a much different place if Freeman had decided to merely think of himself when the aliens began to show up. Rather than becoming the prized resistance staple, maybe Freeman would have been an “every man for himself” type. It’s possible that he would have taken resources from the resistance in order to sustain himself. There’s every chance that he could have engineered himself a hiding place and stayed there, not allowing anyone else in. Considering how hard he actually fights for humans, a selfish Freeman would be hard to stomach.

Aloy

Aloy

Horizon Zero Dawn would be nothing without Aloy. She’s kind, brave, generous, and does everything she can to protect the people she meets. What if instead of being a hero, Aloy instead joined the Eclipse Cultists and used the corrupted machines for evil deeds? Perhaps she would side with HADES and fight to destroy the world, instead of protect it. The world in Horizon Zero Dawn is a beautiful one, and Aloy is a fantastic example of how bravery and determination can overcome anything. That same determination could be used for some very evil deeds.

What do you think of our list of heroes gone bad? Is there another good guy you’d love to see don black and try to take over the world? Would you rather play a game headed up by a villain rather than a hero? Let’s here your thoughts on all this and more in the comments below!
