Top 7 Fantastic Fan Films Gamers Gotta See

Top 7 Fantastic Fan Films Gamers Gotta See

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In that case, fan made films must be akin to seriously committed love letters. These are (usually short) films created by folks who just can’t get enough of their favorite films, comics, or video games. Why just play when you can live it?

Some fan films are known for really unfortunate acting or poor budgets. On the other hand, there are some that raise the bar to almost Hollywood-level quality. We wanted to compile a list of some of the best fan-made films we’ve ever seen.

Here we go!

Skyrim: Into the Void

Skyrim: Into the Void

For how prevalent The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is in video game culture, it makes sense that one of the films on our list would be inspired by it. Skyrim: Into the Void follows the Dragonborn, Dovahkiin, on a journey to restore his humanity. After he’s bitten by a vampire, he has to work with the Dark Brotherhood to get a cure. The synopsis for the film makes this seem like a bad thing, but the Dark Brotherhood questline is always one of my priorities! The film suffers from some bad acting, but thankfully these moments are few and far between. It’s a great look at what Dovahkiin and Skyrim would look like if they came to life.

The Witcher Fan Film

Geralt of Rivia is one of those characters who doesn’t seem to have any shortage of great cosplayers offering their own take on the character. It is no surprise that there are some great The Witcher fan films out there.

This one, in particular, is fairly short and relies heavily on a single, action-packed battle to sell itself. But I don’t have any problem with this. It’s intense, you get to cheer for Geralt (and Ciri!), and it leaves you wanting more. This is also one of the only fan films I’ve seen that has a chase scene on horseback. So, bonus points for that one. Can you ask for anything more?

Hoshino

Hoshino

Considering fan films can partially thank the Star Wars franchise for their popularity, it only seemed right to include one. Hoshino is a film that revolves around Ko Hoshino, a blind Jedi Master. We see how she got her start with her own Jedi master, who taught her to use the Force. Major props go to this fan film for the location, the cinematography, and those special effects! I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone put a lightsaber together with only the use of the Force before, and I’m not sure I ever will again. Hoshino is well worth a watch, if you’re looking for a short and sweet look at a new character in the Star Wars universe.

Croft

Croft

Tomb Raider has always been popular. The Crystal Dynamics reboot of the franchise only added further fuel to the fire. While fans have had different kinds of takes on Lara Croft, this one takes the cake as far as fan-created films go.

Croft is almost 20 minutes long and shows Lara doing everything she can to rescue a kidnapped girl. From the first moment you see her on screen, you know this is Lara Croft and she will do everything in her power to do the right thing. The action scenes will keep you on the edge of your seat and, if you’re anything like me, it’ll make you hungry for more.

Portal: No Escape

Portal: No Escape

Seemingly high production values, good acting, and convincing narratives help make fan films great. This one, Portal: No Escape , has all of the above. The start of the short film is brooding and mysterious, but when that portal gun appeared, I couldn’t help but let out a little cheer. Danielle Rayne makes a very compelling Chell, and it’s incredible to see a portal gun being used in a real-life, gritty environment.

Portal: No Escape released in 2011, and it had over 21 million views by 2018. I don’t know about you, but I find numbers like that very impressive.

Fallout: Revelation

Fallout: Revelation

In looking for films to put in this list, I was sure I’d come across a great one set in the Fallout universe. What I didn’t expect was to find one quite this impressive. Fallout: Revelation is a three-part fan film that grabs you from the very beginning.

A somber message opens the film, and it appears to be the last will and testament from a man who believes he’s about to die. Ben Jurand’s performance grabs you by the collar and never lets go.

Uncharted Fan Film

Uncharted Fan Film

Last, but most certainly not least, we come to a fan film that feels official. It’s based on Naughty Dog’s Uncharted franchise and features the man we’ve all wanted to see as Nathan Drake: Nathan Fillion. His wise-cracking, on-screen personality is a perfect match for Drake, and his first dialogue in the film will have you grinning.

Fillion isn’t the only star here. You’ll also see Stephen Lang take on the role of Sully, which frankly shocked me more than seeing Fillion himself!

This Uncharted film is only around 15 minutes long, but it’s just enough to give fans the taste of Fillion as Drake.

What do you think of the fan films we’ve listed? Have you seen any of these? Do you have another you’re dying to share? Head to the comment section!
