7 Reasons We Bow Before the PC Master Race

7 Reasons We Bow Before the PC Master Race

There are a lot of jokes about the PC master race. Which, well, isn’t a joke when it is coming from some people. Some really see it as the best platform for playing games. While there’s really no definitive best, as the right resource can vary from person to person for multiple reasons, there have been more than a few times when someone might look at a PC and go, “You know, this really is the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race.” In fact, there are seven really relevant reasons why people might even still consider it the way to go.

Free Online Multiplayer

Free Online Multiplayer

Playing with other people over the internet isn’t as hassle-free as it once was on most platforms. If you want to go online with the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One, you’re going to have to pay for it. A paywall locks you out of interactions with other people. If you have a PC, there’s none of that. You can hop online and start playing with anyone anywhere without anything asking for your credit card. (Well, unless you’re playing certain MMOs.)

Easy Streaming

Easy Streaming

Streaming on a PC is effortless. If you grab Open Broadcaster Software, you have an incredible streaming (and recording) program that is easy to use, won’t cost you a penny, and works with most games. Even if you get a game that would normally not be compatible with streaming software, you can just choose to capture what is showing on your desktop, shrink down the area being recorded, and you are good to go. You can start sharing without any trouble.

Multiple Control Schemes

Multiple Control Schemes

With a PC, you get a lot of freedom. You aren’t restricted to just a gamepad when going through a game. If you enjoy shooters, take advantage of the accuracy a mouse affords you. Those hopping into a lot of MMOs could set up all sorts of macros and have all the keyboard buttons to help you out. Racing and flying sims have all sorts of elaborate setups. If you prefer a regular controller, go ahead and hook one up. Essentially, you have all of the options.

Cheap Games

Cheap Games

You can build a huge library of PC games for very little money. There are all sorts of bundle sites out there, inspired by Humble Bundles, that let you pay a few bucks for three or more games. Sales on sites like GOG or Steam give people a chance to stock up. The Epic Games Store gives away free, great games on the regular. Within the span of a few months, you could have around 100 legitimate copies of games to play.

Easy to Upgrade

Easy to Upgrade

When a new console generation comes around, it’s a big deal. You have to decide which platform you want. There’s the money put aside to save up for the thing. Concerns about launch units having issues is always a fear for early adopters. With a PC, that isn’t an issue. If you have a desktop and you start having trouble running new releases, you could go ahead and rebuild. People who are savvy could start cobbling together something better, without worrying about the issues that can come from a new generation.

Mods

Mods

There are certain games that never get old on PCs. That’s because of a dedicated community of fans who decide to put in the effort to keep things fresh. Mods are incredible things. They can be as simple as replacing dragons in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with Thomas the Tank Engine or as elaborate as the gorgeous Grand Theft Auto V Redux. In some cases, mods can even turn into a whole game, like how Black Mesa went from a Half-Life 2 mod to a remake of Half-Life .

Backwards Compatibility

Backwards Compatibility

While people with consoles typically need to be happy with the current generation’s games and are very blessed if the immediate predecessor’s titles still work on them, PCs have never had that issue. It’s much easier to enjoy older games on systems. It might mean resorting to emulation. Some titles could be found as abandonware. DOSBox can always help with getting older titles running. Not to mention, GOG specializes in making sure older games still can be appreciated. PC gaming is a great way to preserve our hobby’s history.
