Top 7 Retro Classics (That Need a Comeback)

Top 7 Retro Classics (That Need a Comeback)

No matter how far we come, companies and creators will always occasionally tap into past ideas to provide future entertainment. It’s why we see loads of remasters and constant remakes. A proven property could always be a chance to have people fall in love again. Since reboots are all the rage and titles like Star Ocean or The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening have received a complete redo, it feels like a good time to tap back into other classic NES, Super NES, Genesis, and Game Boy games and give them new life.

Shining Force II

Shining Force II

Shining Force II is an incredible strategy game that really did a lot for the series. It didn’t force you into chapters or character growth, instead allowing you to explore the world more and choose how people developed. It was a standalone title, so you didn’t have to have any prior experience with the series. Given how well the genre is doing now, it seems like a prime time to revisit the series and move away from the turn-based RPGs and back to its roots.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

We don’t see remakes or remasters of Super Mario games. That’s weird, right? It seems like the kind of game that could have some sort of revival. If that’s going to happen, I’d like to nominate Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins . It was a weird, fun little game with some fun concepts. It introduced Wario, and a revival could be a way to bring back the Wario Land games too. It had a neat Carrot power up with new ability and new level challenges. It would be fun to see how it could work and look on the Switch. Especially if, like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening , it had a unique and distinctive look.

Maniac Mansion

Maniac Mansion

Maniac Mansion is the sort of adventure game that even people who aren’t fans of the genre probably played. It was a great, goofy, LucasArts game about that weird house on the street. You know, the one with the neighbors you knew were up to no good. Well, you picked which plucky teenagers went in to investigate the clearly supernatural people and save the day. It was fun even if you failed. Given how well adventure games do now, it’d be a great game to revive.

F-Zero

F-Zero

Let’s be frank. F-Zero has been robbed. This fantastic, futuristic racer is an incredible game. It used Mode 7 to give us rotational tracks and the sorts of special effects that were unseen in games back when it launched on the Super NES. If you have played a futuristic racer since 1990, a little bit of F-Zero is present in its DNA. But, the series has been

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Zelda II: The Adventures of Link was an unconventional game. It’s great and a lot of fun elements to it. But it was very experimental, since it had the traditional overworld, but side-scrolling towns and dungeon areas. It meant it wasn’t super well-received in its time, but it influenced later games and could be a huge hit in a period where people love The Legend of Zelda games that dare to be different. A remake of it could be fantastic and show all of the good this game did.

Phantasy Star IV

Phantasy Star IV

Phantasy Star IV was supposed to get a remake. It was supposed to be redone for the PlayStation 2 in Japan. Which would have been great, as it was the longest installment in the Genesis-era series. It had a planet-hopping story with a diverse cast. It had so many challenges and encouraged you to explore. There is so much that could have been done with its story. But it never happened. It’s a shame. With Phantasy Star on people’s minds, thanks to Phantasy Star Online 2 being localized, a proper remake could be a lovely alternative option for offline players.

Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger

While only two Chrono games have ever been released outside of Japan, the series has an enduring legacy. People can’t forget the time-traveling adventures and how the story shifts and changes based on your decisions and when you decide to face the final boss. Everything about it is memorable, from the battle system to the storyline. It’s reappeared several time on different platforms, but maybe we need a full remake. Perhaps we need some sort of full restoration to bring it back and perhaps help pave the way for a follow-up to Chrono Cross.
