Top 5 Five Nights at Freddy’s Facts Fans Should Know

Top 5 Five Nights at Freddy’s Facts Fans Should Know

Well, Five Nights at Freddy ’s 4 just got a brand new trailer, and an important announcement moving up its release date by two months. If FNAF4 is anything like FNAF 1-3 , Scott Cawthon is probably just going to release it randomly without any fanfare sometime in the next month or so. So in preparation for this inevitable random release, we bring you a look back at the series with Five Facts at Freddy’s that you probably didn’t know.

FNAF Was Inspired By Scott’s Work on an Earlier, Non-Scary Game

Scott Cawthon is a poster boy for turning failure into success. Before he became famous for Five Nights at Freddy’s, he made a game called Chipper & Sons Lumber Company , which featured anthropomorphized animals growing and harvesting trees. The thing is, the characters in the background had blank smiles on the faces and their animations were stiff and had few frames to them. This coupled by their oddly blocky appearance made them look like, well, creepy animatronics, which was one of the main complaints Cawthon got about the game. Deciding that this was a feature, not a bug, Cawthon went on to purposefully use this inadvertently creepy art style to make the animatronics in Five Nights at Freddy ’s. In an interview with Indie Game Mag, Cawthon said, “I was heartbroken and was ready to give up on game-making. Then one night, something just snapped in me, and I thought to myself, “I bet I can make something a lot scarier than that.”

Foxy Was Drawn In a Car

Foxy, one of the fan favorite animatronics in the FNAF series, is known for its broken down and janky look. Well, that look may have also been a serendipitous accident. Cawthon modeled Foxy on his laptop while riding as a passenger on a 24 hour car ride to visit his in-laws in the summer of 2014. Cawthon mentioned that the ride was particularly bumpy , and that this may have added to Foxy’s torn up look.

At his visit, Cawthon’s kids got to experience Foxy’s jump scare for the first time, which Cawthon also created on the ride down. You may notice that Foxy’s jump scare in FNAF 1 actually has far less animation than any other animatronic’s scare. Perhaps this too was a product of the less than perfect conditions that Cawthon was originally modeling Foxy in.

Five Nights at Freddy’s Was a Kickstarter Failure

Five Nights at Freddy’s Was a Kickstarter Failure

We love to praise Kickstarter for the opportunities it gives indie game developers, but the fact is, you kind of already need a name for yourself in order to make Kickstarter work in your favorite. For unknowns, Kickstarter is a difficult way to get your funds up and running, especially if you have no marketing experience. Just ask Scott Cawthon, who decided to try and Kickstart Five Nights at Freddy ’s way before it first came out. He asked for $10,000 and got a grand total of… $0. Yes, our fan favorite horror game got absolutely zero dollars. So little money came in (and by that we mean zero dollars), in the first few days of the crowdfunding campaign (slated to last from Jun 14 to July 14 2014) that Cawthon simply canceled the Kickstarter on June 17, a mere 3 days later. You can still view the ghost of the original Kickstarter page, here .

While the religion of a game developer probably shouldn’t matter, Cawthon’s Christianity has informed his game making process. He actually started as a Christian game developer (a developer of Christian themed games, not a developer who is Christian, although he is that too), and made several unknown titles based on the bible such as The Pilgrim ’s Progress. He is also a part of Hope Animation, which is specifically billed as a group of Christian animators hoping to spread the word and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Cawthon, in an interview with Geeks Under Grace, characterized his relationship with God as absolutely essential. At times he was frustrated with God for his financial failures in the Christian game market, but he still feels as of God commissioned him to make them, so much so that he said it was his duty to make them at the cost of his job and his comfortable life.

He even has advice for struggling people going through the same hardships, stating, “Don’t strive for success and money. Doing that just means God is going to have to work even harder to break you. Focus on Him and do what’s right. If you get your heart right and live an honest life, God will grant you success, though it will come in different forms and in different ways. If you humble yourself before Him, He will take care of you. Don’t be like me and force Him to spend twenty years trying to get your heart right first.”

Fans Are So Rabid, They Accidentally Harassed an Innocent Pizzeria

Scott Cawthon loves to hide Easter Eggs in his previews and marketing materials. He goes so far as to hide hidden messages in pictures that you can only find by turning the contrast or saturation up, and even hiding hidden messages in the source code of his website, scottgames.com. When Five Nights at Freddy ’s 4 was first teased, Scott hid numerous “87”s in the source code of the site, a reference to the bite of 87, an event where one of the animatronics in a Freddy Fazber’s Pizza restaurant took a bite out of the head and frontal lobe of a customer, which will likely play a big part in FNAF 4.

But fans, eager to find out more of the game, noticed a similarity of the numbers to coordinates. After plugging them into a map, they found that the coordinates lead to a pizzeria, totally by coincidence. Desperate to find out more, fans began calling up the pizzeria over and over again trying to ask about Five Nights at Freddy ’s 4. It got so out of control that Scott Cawthon had to make a Reddit account and make his first Reddit post ever, telling his fans to please stop harassing the pizzeria as it has nothing to do with the game.

A Look at Five Nights at Freddy’s 4

A Look at Five Nights at Freddy’s 4

So those were five facts about the FNAF series so far, but what about Five Nights at Freddy ’s 4? Well, the game was originally slated to come out on October 31, 2015, appropriate considering it’s Halloween and all, but Cawthon has recently moved the date up to August, so we will all be playing this game sooner than we thought. Not to worry, though, Cawthon has said that an extra piece of story DLC will come out on Halloween this year in order to keep the date special.

Aside from that, we just got our first look at a trailer for Five Nights at Freddy ’s 4 and it looks awesome. Instead of taking place in a pizzeria or an attraction, it now takes place in someone’s home. Once again it seems as if the animatronics are out to get you, but there is something far more sinister at work now. Your only defenses are doors and flashlights. It appears as if the animatronics hide if you shine light on them or look directly at them, but they will continue to hound you through the night. There are also lots of terrifying other things, like a Springtrap doll and tiny little mini Freddies that creep up behind you. It seems like FNAF 4 will take cues from fan games such as One Night’s at Flumpty’s and Five Nights at the Krusty Krab in that it will give you many things to manage in the room you are in, in addition to keeping track of the animatronics.

But perhaps most interesting is that the game is full 3D now. No more still images. Now you have a full 3D environment to move around. The animatronics are also fully 3D and you can catch them moving in the dark if you are quick enough. Yes, this is about as terrifying as it sounds.

But don’t take our word for it. Get scared out of your mind by watching the trailer right here .
