7 Best Free Games for the Broke Ass Gamer

7 Best Free Games for the Broke Ass Gamer

Free PC games are a totally common game. You can find them pretty much everywhere online, through all sorts of sites and storefronts. Finding good free console games is a lot trickier. Fortunately, we’re masters of figuring out what is out there to play! These seven Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One games are all available! Grab your controller, head to your favorite digital storefront, and see if you can find a new favorite game to play.

Fortnite

Fortnite

Listen, we all know this is an obligatory inclusion. Fortnite is one of the biggest games in the world right now. It is free to hop into its battle royale mode. Epic Games is constantly adding new content and features to keep it engaging and relevant. It is a big deal. If you grab it on the Switch, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One, you will have access to a huge community of other people to play with. It is easy to hop into and learn, especially with the Creative mode. It is a safe bet.

Also, if you don’t have a console, it is on the PC and both Android and iOS devices.

Pokemon Quest

Pokemon Quest

Pokemon Quest is an odd little game. You collect Pokemon from the original generation. You add them to a team of three. You send them into areas and basically watch them do their thing, though you can tell them when to use certain skills. It is a very chill experience and, while it takes some grinding, can absolutely be beaten without paying for anything. It is unique and definitely worth trying for free on the Switch.

It is also available on mobile devices!

Gwent

Gwent

It can be easy to forget just how good the Gwent minigame in The Witcher series is. After all, it isn’t totally necessary to play. Which might make people forget that you can get a free version of it on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It lets you play through the card game, build decks, and fight against other people. Given how versatile the game is, that it is easy to pick up, and requires no knowledge of the series it came from, it is a good pick for anyone in need of a new card game.

You can grab it for PCs too!

Warframe

Warframe

Warframe is a free-to-play shooter that is as much about gunning stuff down as it is about enjoying the freedom of movement. People get to go through missions, running around and enjoying how they can get around while completing missions with other people. It is totally cooperative, and anything cool you see, you can earn without paying real money. Plus, Digital Extremes is good about supporting this Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One game. (By the way, it’s on PCs too!)

Tetris 99

Tetris 99

Tetris 99 is the first true free console exclusive on this list. It also is only technically free, since you need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play. But if you do, then this free battle royale game is amazing. It is Tetris, except each match is played against 99 other people. Are you good enough at the game to stay alive, K.O. other players, and become number one? If not, it’s no big deal and you can jump right in and enjoy some more Tetris again.

Deltarune

Deltarune

Free RPGs that do something different and have heart are kind of rare, and Deltarune’ s first chapter is one of those games. A title from Toby Fox, the maker of Undertale, it also seems to be set in an alternate reality of that game. It has a turn-based battle system, the power of friendship, and some very clever writing. It is free on the Switch and PlayStation 4 starting at the end of February 2019, making it one of the best free console games at the moment. (It also also one of the better free PC games too!)

Apex Legends

Apex Legends

Apex Legends is the sort of game that does everything right. It is a first-person shooter that taps into Titanfall ‘s world. It is from Respawn, a company that knows how to make shooters. It has a diverse crew of characters with great skills sets to encourage people to fill certain roles. It has people work on teams of three, to help support each other while hunting other squads in a battle royale. It has a great communication system that works even if you don’t enable voice chat. Plus, it’s just fun! It’s free on the PS4 and Xbox One right now! Or, you know, on computers too.
