Top 10 Gamer Fights That Need to Stop

Top 10 Gamer Fights That Need to Stop

Most people who have hobbies are, well, passionate about their hobbies! That even holds true when people within the same hobby are sharing their passions with each other. Naturally, that can sometimes lead to arguments, both measured and otherwise. No space enjoys arguments for the sake of arguments more than the gaming community. Over the years, as social gaming spaces have grown and expanded, so too have the same arguments, lasting sometimes decades, continued in circular fashion. So let’s cut to the chase, and talk about some of the most timeless, neverending, and in some cases quite recent gamer arguments.

2D vs 3D

2D vs 3D

Many gaming arguments revolve around technology, as the face of gaming itself has often changed drastically based on tech, and that often coincides with generations of both consoles and people. A prime example is visual style, which is often considered parallel to technological strength. Some gamers see a two-simensional graphic and shriek in horror, and others see 3D and think it the form has destroyed all artistical nuance.

Hardcore vs Casual

Hardcore vs Casual

There is a section of the gaming community that not only dislikes mobile gaming, but detests mobile gaming. To these folks, mobile gaming is a pox on the video game industry itself. Meanwhile, nearly half of all people, as in humans, play games on their phones and enjoy them quite a bit. Some folks, known as “whales,” even spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on them.

PC vs Consoles

PC vs Consoles

This obnoxious graphic, from video personality Yahtzee, is often used as a banner for some of the loudest arguing in the gaming community. There’s a huge divide between PC and console gamers, usually due to how different those gaming experiences can be. Considering tweaking minor settings, graphical power, and ease of use, all of these factors are used as kindling for discourse fires.

Console Wars

While console players can band together against PC players, when that argument isn’t happening, the console players will often turn against each other to argue further. The Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo camps are often flinging explosives at each other over company lines, even though some gamers are happy to have multiple options.

Contextual Criticism vs “Objective” Reviews

Contextual Criticism vs “Objective” Reviews

As gaming has evolved, so has the way we talk about and criticise games. But not everyone is okay with these changes. Often, this is where arguments about “SJWs” and whatnot come into play, and the word “objective” gets thrown around carelessly. Of course, what it really boils down to is one camp wanting to examine games with a more broad context, and others wanting to keep things just to things like game mechanics and if a game is “fun” or not.

Fidelity vs Performance

Fidelity vs Performance

This one is somewhat related to PC vs consoles, but has slowly leaked out into all of gaming, as consoles themselves have basically just become PCs. Now, as limits are pushed more and more, developers often have to choose between a slow, but steady frame rate, and top of the line visuals. This of course has proponents on either side, with some gamers proclaiming themselves the “frame rate police,” and others more interested in movie-like experiences, even if the refresh rate isn’t perfect.

Steam vs Epic Games

Steam vs Epic Games

This is a new one! Fortnite and Unreal Engine peddler Epic Games has launched its own digital video game marketplace, and it has caused great disruptions in gaming by throwing bags of money at publishers for exclusive deals. In some cases, this has yanked a game or two away from Steam like, days before launch date. Naturally, some people are mad about that, especially those who were thrilled to have most if not all of their games in one place. Whoops!

East vs West

East vs West

While video games are developed all over the world, the vast majority of them are made in either Japan or somewhere in the west, usually the United States or Canada. Anyway, this particular brand of argument generally happens with RPGs. Some people only want to play Japanese RPGs, and other only like western RPGs. These two groups often clash and have meme battles with each other. Hilarity (sometimes) ensues.

Physical vs Digital

Physical vs Digital

Digital sales of games are growing every year, by thousands and thousands of sales. Meanwhile, physical games are becoming more and more collector-oriented. For those who don’t want to shell out for soundtrack CDs and doodads, they just like to feel like they own their games and have items to display on their shelves. Digital fans appreciate the convenience, and sometimes the deep discounts.

Youtubers vs Writers

Youtubers vs Writers

This one is weird to comment on, since I am technically involved. Anyway, another big split in the gaming community, and one that’s often a source of arguments, revolves around where and how they get their gaming content. The rise of streamers and “Youtubers” has created competition with writers and people in traditional video game websites. This is more of a rift than a preference, aka a source of tension, due to often different rules these groups face when it comes to things like sponsorship discolsures. At the same time, Youtubers are often more relatable to the average gamer, as journalists and writers often seek to produce more in-depth criticism as that’s what they’re into personally. It’s ongoing and fascinating to see it develop and grow more complicated over time.
