Top 10 Battle Royale Spin-Offs We Need

Top 10 Battle Royale Spin-Offs We Need

We’ve written a lot on the subject of battle royale games. There’s a reason for that, and the reason is people love them. There’s a unique sort of universal appeal to the concept, despite it being so wacky-sounding on paper. Because of that, tons of developers have been experimenting in the space, including with major IP such as Call of Duty and even Tetris . And since Tetris 99 is so dang good, perhaps there’s plenty of room for more weird spinoffs and ideas. So, here’s a list of wacky ideas that totally had tons of thought put into them. So  much thought.

Gang Beasts

Gang Beasts

Double Fine’s Gang Beasts is a hilarious, multiplayer “fighting” game that’s more about laughing at goofy physics than anything else. Right now, it’s a four-player game, but what if the scale of this ridiculous brawler was expanded severalfold? Would it be proportionately hilarious? Maybe!

Ace Combat

Ace Combat

The latest Ace Combat is an awesome game that not only made longtime fans happy, but also drew in some new, curious onlookers. Part of it was an expansive progression tree and tight, arcade-like gameplay. There was even a multiplayer mode that allowed the best players to really test their skills. Now, imagine a sky full of more planes than ever before. So many missiles!

Fire Emblem

Fire Emblem

Yeah, I know, this is a wacky idea. But Fire Emblem is a turn-based strategy game in which one wrong move can ruin an entire attempt at a level. That’s pretty much how battle royale games work already, minus the turn-based part. Could a giant, multiplayer Fire Emblem map full of player-controlled characters work? The weapon triangle would probably ruin it, but hey, it’s worth a shot.

Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts

This one would require some real creativity, but there’s a perfect lore excuse to make this happen. The earliest bits of Kingdom Hearts lore include an event known as the Keyblade Wars, in which hundreds of Keyblade weilders threw down en masse. That sounds like the perfect excuse for an action-packed battle royale game with some Square Enix flair.

Minecraft

Minecraft

Minecraft already allows for a large number of players to hang out together on servers. But why not turn it into a battle for a sole survivor? A shrinking island full of hazards and enemies could be a great test of a player’s creativity and critical thinking skills as they try to utilize the crafting systems to survive.

Pac-Man

Pac-Man

Remember Pac-Man Vs ? It’s the one with three players playing as ghosts, with one player as the hero. It showed up on the Nintendo Switch recently, after years of being an obscure GameCube title. What if that idea, but bigger? I’m picturing a combination of that game and Pac-Man 256 , with a giant maze shrinking via an encroaching 256 glitch, with players fighting to chomp ghosts and fruit for the highest score.

Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros.

This one’s a pipe dream. After all, getting an eight-player mode running smoothly was already a nightmare. However, imagine how ridiculous a 100-player, one stock each round of Super Smash Bros. would be. It would be absolute chaos to the highest degree. And what is Super Smash Bros. good for, if not chaos? Exactly.

Unreal Tournament

Unreal Tournament

Epic Games already has its hand full with Fortnite . We’ve already seen the company put the brakes on its ongoing Unreal Tournament project as a result. But now with things like Blackout and Apex Legends , the first-person battle royale game is a growing prospect. Epic Games likely is already thinking about a way to capitalize on that. Why not take the work already done on Unreal Tournament and do something with that?

Street Fighter

Street Fighter

Here’s the worst idea on this list, but also perhaps the most intriguing. We’ve already seen Tetris break new ground by inserting a puzzle game into battle royale. Could it be done with a fighting game? Structurally, who knows! There is precedent for fighting games experimenting with more than two players, such as in Street Fighter X Tekken and Guilty Gear Isuka . But you can’t just drop 100 characters onto a flat stage together and expect that to be good. But whatever this is, I would love to see someone attempt it.

Splatoon

Splatoon

This one’s obvious. Nintendo’s awesome shooter IP, but with a battle royale twist? Please, tell me where to sign up. I would especially be curious about what angle Nintendo would take here, considering how Splatoon tries to avoid the idea of “killing” opponents. But even if it’s just a “spat, no respawn” sort of deal, there’s a lot of potential in even playing it straight here, especially with the ink mechanics.
