Top 6 Codes to Cheat Your Ass Off

Top 6 Codes to Cheat Your Ass Off

Video games are great on their own, but every now and then it is fun to enhance them with some cheat codes. Now, cheat codes have mostly gone the way of the dodo, but they used to bring a lot to games. They could take a fairly normal game and make it absurd. They could bring in new content. Importantly, they could also save a ton of time or help people out when they were stuck. Here is our list of top 6 cheat codes in video games.

Grand Theft Auto III – Summon a Tank

Grand Theft Auto III – Summon a Tank

Grand Theft Auto has a long history with cheat codes, but one of the best has always been the ability to summon a tank. The tank is a devastating vehicle and it can be a pleasure to get it long before you’re supposed to be able to. It’s also convenient. Best of all? If you use the tank right, you can get it to fly. I know, it’s crazy sounding, but this was a real hoot back on the PS2.

Konami Code

Konami Code

Konami has made some hard games over its long history. One particularly challenging example would be the sidescrolling bullet-hell, Contra. Thankfully, Konami has also had a legendary code in a lot of its games. Dubbed the Konami code, this input, often referenced in pop culture, can do a variety of things like give extra lives depending on what game you are playing. The input is up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start. Perhaps that sounds familiar?

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Get All Chaos Emeralds

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Get All Chaos Emeralds

When I was much younger, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was a game I found particularly tricky. Not only was it hard to progress, it was difficult for me to get all the emeralds. Playground rumors suggested that there was a way to get something called Super Sonic through a cheat, though. After visiting this very website , I discovered it is true. If a player enters a sequence of sounds from the sound test menu, they can get all the emeralds. Then all they have to do is hold down the A button in a stage, and Sonic will turn into a golden version of himself called Super Sonic.

Banjo Kazooie – Washing Machine Banjo

Banjo Kazooie – Washing Machine Banjo

Banjo Kazooie will long stand as one of the best collectathon games ever created. It was also pretty innovative, originally promising a series of unlockables that could be earned in the first game and carried over into the sequel. Ultimately, this wasn’t implemented until the games were later released digitally for the Xbox 360. That doesn’t mean the game didn’t have some other fun unlockables. By going to a location called Treasure Trove Castle and entering some letters, players could do things like become a washing machine. It wasn’t entirely useful, but boy, was it fun.

Mortal Kombat – Turn on Blood

Mortal Kombat – Turn on Blood

My Mom once rented Mortal Kombat for me when I was a kid, and it did not go over well. That game was definitely considered controversial at the time, and there were versions where the excessive gore was censored to try to appease people. Fortunately, and strangely, a code could be entered that would turn the blood back on. I didn’t much care for it, but there sure were people who did. Furthermore, it’s just a little bit funny that such an easy code could be entered to undermine the censorship.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire – Control a Wampa

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire – Control a Wampa

This was a tricky but amazing game and I’ll admit that I cheated my way through it as a kid. There was a level select code that was very tricky to input on the N64 controller and, honestly, I had to use my mouth to reach and input all the buttons because of my two small hands, though. The best thing, though, was being able to control a Wampa. Players only needed to enter their name as _Wampa__Stompa, which is a pretty great name, and then enter a simple button command on the second level. I absolutely loved this.
